Dragon Ball Z - Budokai Tenkaichi 3 + PS2 Emulator | 1.42 GB
It would appear the EA Sports bug has bitten Spike, the developers behind the DragonBall Z Tenkaichi series. You know the deal; same game as last year repackaged with minor revisions to justify buying the title all over again. Tenkaichi 2 was a great introduction for the DBZ series for the Wii, bringing with it many of the cool features from the PS2 version (most notably the epic campaign mode) along with the ability to unleash kamehameha blasts by making the actual motions thanks to the Wiimote's motion sensing technology. Cosplay DBZ fans rejoiced. Budokai Tekaichi 3, on the other hand, despite being a more streamlined experience, has sacked many of the cool features that made Tenkaichi 2 an epic game.
One of the most heinous (or positive depending on your outlook) changes this time around is found with Dragon History, the single player story mode. Tenkaichi 2 featured a large World Map that players were able to explore with the DBZ character of their choice. With light in-game scripting and most of the story told via conversations, Tenkaichi 2 wasn't a jaw dropping cinematic experience, but featured so many battles (both major and minor from nearly every DBZ story arc) and side quests that really made the game worth every penny.
This time around it would appear Spike wanted to up the cinematic quality of the battles to be more in line with the television series. This means the world map, many of the minor battles and side quests are gone in favor of a match-by-match showdown with far more developed cut scenes and scripted moments. On one hand it does make the game, as I said earlier, more of a streamlined experience with less needless "wandering", on the other, the RPG-adventure-lite experience provided by Tenkaichi 2 (and I do miss hunting for Dragonballs) has been sacked. Thankfully the Z point system remains, allowing you to earn Z-points (via playing through the different game modes) to upgrade your DBZ characters of choice, which can mean the difference in online battles.
Though the world map exploration system has been sacked, many of the other modes do contain hidden gems. The ranked tournament mode, Dragon World Tour, is back, along with Ultimate Battle which contains a number of variants on the traditional "survivor" mode found in many fighters. Fans of River City Ransom may get a kick out of one mode in particular (well at least I did) - Sim Dragon. It is a simple menu-based mode that gives you 10-days to prep your fighter for a match. You can select to rest your character, train, or explore. I am still trying to master the system, and I may be giving credit to something that could possibly be as simplistic and random as a die roll, but it is interesting to see the results from your selections and try to find a pattern. With each action your fighter's stats and health either go up or down, and at the end of the ten days you are off to fight your opponent.
Spike does deserve credit for making a damn beautiful game for the Wii. The cell animations, at least to my aging eyes, look crisper and more vibrant before the previous version, especially if you are lucky enough to be running at 480p. Thankfully all of the voice acting from the previous game returns including the narrated menus and more importantly BOTH the Japanese and English language tracks with many of the actors from the series lending their voices to make this a truly authentic product. I wish more titles from Japan included the original language track as an option, but that is just me. Fans of the series will also rejoice about the online functionality. Sure it is occasionally laggy, and some of the opponents I faced had used their Z-points well to make some pretty tough fighters, but at least you don't have to force your roommate or invite friends over for some competitive action. In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if the world map from the single player and much of the content was sacked simply to make room for online play...
For many, the simple inclusion of online multiplayer in DragonBall Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 will be worth the price of admission as it is a feature the series deserved for a long time. Unfortunately the sacrifices made in the campaign mode are very noticeable and sorely missed. The new eye-candy scripted moments are great, but after a while their novelty wears thin. If you really don't care about the online multiplayer, it may be worth it to see what Spike does for next year's version of Tenkaichi... they should start labeling them by year perhaps, like EA does.
